The high-low collaborations keep on coming. This time, it’s Alexander Wang for H&M. H&M announced its partnership with Wang during a party at Coachella last night on Saturday, April 12. Wang will be the first American designer working with the Swedish retail giant.

“I am honored to be a part of H&M’s designer collaborations. The work with their team is an exciting, fun process. They are very open to push boundaries and to set a platform for creativity,” said Wang in a press release. “This will be a great way for a wider audience to experience elements of the Alexander Wang brand and lifestyle.”

H&M, known for its fast fashion, debuted French designer Isabel Marant’s capsule collection in November to rave reviews. During the weeks preceding the release, articles circulated the Internet explaining how to survive the shopping experience. Apparently, shoppers camped out the night before and, when Marant’s collection finally became available online, H&M’s website crashed due to shoppers from around the world trying to get their hands on at least one item.

Bringing Wang to H&M will no doubt cause just as much, if not more of a frenzy. The 30-year-old, who is currently the creative director of both his namesake label and Balenciaga, is known for his urban chic aesthetic. The New York-based designer revealed he had his partying girl friends in mind when designing the accessories for his fall 2014 collection.

“It actually stems from one of my friends telling me she goes out at night and she loses all the things in her purse by the time she gets home,” said Wang in a promotional video for his talk at Savannah College of Art and Design. “So how can she keep track of her wallet or cellphone?”

The accessories for his ready-to-wear collection include lighter cases in the shoes and retractable key rings. For apparel, he designed utilitarian dresses and coats with multiple pockets on the front for easy storage as well as neon-lined jackets and glossy rain boots.

The Alexander Wang x H&M collection is set to release on Nov. 6.

  3. […] Alexander Wang’s collections are only getting stronger each season. Wang began by bringing the black and white barcodes he introduced last fall and using them as belts before revealing the aquatic sports motif of his new collection. Subtle hints of a sporty vibe include the blue rectangle on the neckline of a white shirt, resembling a rash guard, and two-strap mesh cap heels. With his signature black and neon palette, the Parsons dropout created scuba dresses with flirty pleated hems and halter crop tops paired with sleek black high-waisted trousers. Woven shoes were a hybrid of vibrant water shoes and heels. A handful of white above-the-knee outfits with pointy green collars became one of the highlights of the collection. […]
